The only pianist to have died on stage was the great Russian virtuoso Simon Barere, who collapsed from a cerebral haemorrhage in Carnegie Hall while playing the first movement of the Grieg Concerto on 2 April 1951. Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-69) had just finished playing his composition Morte!! when he was taken ill. He expired three weeks later from peritonitis.
