The BBC Proms have released a new film showing Sol Gabetta performing an excerpt from Elgar's Cello Concerto, one of the works that will open the Proms a week today. In it, Gabetta's 300-year-old instrument becomes a screen as infrared cameras track the cello and project a film onto it.

The 2016 season BBC Proms has a particular focus on the cello: ten cello concertos will be performed throughout the season, starting with Elgar's much-loved composition performed by Sol Gabetta on the First Night.

A film explaining how 'Cello' was filmed can be found here. Catch Sol Gabetta performing the concerto in its entirety at the First Night of the BBC Proms, on 15 July, broadcast live on BBC 2 and Radio 3.
