Today's lunchtime BBC Prom sees the BBC Singers give the world premiere performance of Laura Mvula's The Virgin of Montserrat, a ten-minute a capella work inspired by the Black Madonna in the famous Catalonian monastery in the work's title.
It's the first time the Proms has staged a work by Mvula, who studied composition at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. She is, however, already extremely well known to a wide audience as one of today's most creative song-writers, whose albums Sing to the Room and The Dreaming Room were both nominated for the Mercury Prize.
