Armida Quartett tour China

The BBC Radio 3 New Generation string quartet on its first visit to Asia

Armida Quartett tour China

Before our first trip to Asia as a string quartet, the first thing we did was look up our Chinese Zodiac signs: Armida Quartett was born in the years of the Ox, Rabbit, Dragon and Monkey. We took these all as good signs! The Chinese stars liked us...

... And so did the audiences in Far East! It was amazing to see what an enthusiastic response the Taiwanese people had to the music of Beethoven, Schumann, Schubert, Smetana and Dvořák – especially the younger members of the audience.

From our thrilling experience in Taiwan, we continued with performances in Shanghai and finished the tour with a concert and master class in Singapore.

Besides making beautiful music we particularly enjoyed the hospitality of the places we visited. When we arrived in Taipei there were two huge bouquets of flowers waiting for the ladies of the Armida Quartett and the general manager of our luxurious hotel requested a picture with us.

As well as having the chance to meet many wonderful people and make new friends, we got to see the sights. We visited the third highest skyscraper in the world: Tower 101 in Taipei; enjoyed too many dumplings in Shanghai, and sweated like crazy in the tropical heat of beautiful Singapore.

We would like to thank everyone who was in charge of organizing this tour. It will certainly go down in Armida Quartett history as the best first tour of Asia we have ever done. Xièxiè!
