The Music Department is one of the largest and liveliest in London with a huge array of orchestras, bands and choirs and more than 45 specialist music staff. More than 60% of our pupils take part in musical activities throughout the year and there are opportunities for all types of musician, from Classical, Carnatic to Contemporary.
We offer free tuition to all Year 7 pupils, on a first-come first-served basis, on a variety of instruments: Oboe, French Horn, Bassoon, Orchestral Percussion and Harp. While most ensembles are open to all, pupils may wish to audition for the premiere groups such as the Chamber Orchestra, the Big Band, the Opera Group, the Symphony Orchestra and the Senior Chapel Choir. These ensembles perform at major concerts including at St Paul’s Cathedral and St John’s Smith’s Square.
Pupils regularly go on to study music at top universities and conservatoires, often winning Scholarships. In each of the past three years we have had pupils winning places at London Conservatoires, including two on full Scholarships to the Royal Academy of Music.
Oberlin students celebrate tradition and they create the future.
They are mentored and challenged. They grow comfortable with risk. They perform with ensembles small and large, with guest artists and peers, in recording studios and in concert halls, on stage and on tour, playing music by the masters and composers from our time.
They envision the sounds of tomorrow.
