BA Music: Typical modules include Musicianship, Composition, Improvisation and Phonetics.

Westminster School

Westminster School, in the heart of London, has a thriving Music Department and the Music Scholars play a key role in the musical life of the school. Up to eight 13+ and four 16+ music scholarships may be awarded annually. Candidates must audition for the scholarships, offering at least two instruments and demonstrating a high level of general musicianship and great potential for development. In addition to this, as with all other entrants, pupils hoping to gain a music scholarship must also win a place at the school on academic merit, performing well in the entrance exams and interviews. The Dean and Chapter of Westminster Abbey also kindly support a 16+ Henry Purcell Organ Scholarship at Westminster School worth 10% of the current day fees.

A Music Scholar will receive a 10% remission of the day fee, whether a day pupil or a boarder, and will also receive free tuition on up to two instruments. Similarly to the academic scholarships, an additional bursary can be awarded on a means-tested basis if required.

Pro Corda, Suffolk

Pro Corda offers a wide range of programmes and courses for talented young musicians. Pro Corda is lucky to have its own year round permanent home, Leiston Abbey in Suffolk, and the warm family environment there combined with the facilities of an international music school provide the perfect setting for young people to explore and learn creatively together in a safe and inspiring environment. Benslow Music

Benslow Music, conveniently situated in the market town of Hitchin, thirty miles north of London, offers a wide range of some 160 short residential music courses for non-professional musicians of all ages and abilities, from beginners to near-professional level, throughout the year both during the week and at weekends. Its hand-picked tutors include some of the most famous names in the music business, while its hospitality and musical facilities are second to none and its gardens are outstandingly beautiful.

Birmingham Conservatoire

Besançon international Competition for young Conductors

Established in 1951, the Besançon Competition soon became the most prestigious event of its kind. The Competition is open to all artists who wish to become professional conductors. With a repertoire which spans classical, romantic and contemporary music, as well as oratorio and opera, it is the most complete competition in the world!

After preliminaries in Berlin, Besançon, Montreal or Beijing, only 20 candidates will be invited to Besançon in September for audition with orchestra; only one Grand Prix will be awarded!

The Piano Teachers Course ETPA UK

Now in its 7th year, PTC continues to equip pianists & piano teachers with the full range of professional skills for a successful career, plus the opportunity to connect with an inspiring & informative network of pianists.

It provides excellent preparation for all Piano Teaching Diplomas, including those from the ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall and London College, through exposure to the latest in piano teaching pedagogy.

A part-time course, it is designed to suit those with other commitments, lasting one academic year from October through to June. The 2015-16 course consists of two residential weekends, four single Sundays and independent study spread throughout the year.

Forest School

The Music Department is one of the largest and liveliest in London with a huge array of orchestras, bands and choirs and more than 45 specialist music staff. More than 60% of our pupils take part in musical activities throughout the year and there are opportunities for all types of musician, from Classical, Carnatic to Contemporary.

We offer free tuition to all Year 7 pupils, on a first-come first-served basis, on a variety of instruments: Oboe, French Horn, Bassoon, Orchestral Percussion and Harp. While most ensembles are open to all, pupils may wish to audition for the premiere groups such as the Chamber Orchestra, the Big Band, the Opera Group, the Symphony Orchestra and the Senior Chapel Choir. These ensembles perform at major concerts including at St Paul’s Cathedral and St John’s Smith’s Square.

Pupils regularly go on to study music at top universities and conservatoires, often winning Scholarships. In each of the past three years we have had pupils winning places at London Conservatoires, including two on full Scholarships to the Royal Academy of Music.

Open College of the Arts

OCA offers high quality HE open learning music courses in Composition and History/Context. All courses are externally validated and are available nationally and internationally.

The Composing Music courses are at 3 levels and of interest to musicians from all traditions including folk and jazz, as well as ‘classical’.

The music history and context course (From the Present to the Past) enables students to develop a deeper understanding of western classical music, its instruments, key composers and repertoire. It also provides a non-technical (and optional) introduction to music notation and theory.
