Birmingham Conservatoire is a place where talent develops, individual creativity flourishes and successful careers begin – all against the backdrop of one of Europe’s great modern cities. With our roots in Birmingham School of Music, established 125 years ago in 1886, we continue to educate and train musicians, including our Junior Conservatoire, to the highest professional standards in solo performance, composition, chamber music, orchestral playing, vocal performance, music technology and jazz. The Music Department is one of the largest and liveliest in London with a huge array of orchestras, bands and choirs and more than 45 specialist music staff. More than 60% of our pupils take part in musical activities throughout the year and there are opportunities for all types of musician, from Classical, Carnatic to Contemporary.
We offer free tuition to all Year 7 pupils, on a first-come first-served basis, on a variety of instruments: Oboe, French Horn, Bassoon, Orchestral Percussion and Harp. While most ensembles are open to all, pupils may wish to audition for the premiere groups such as the Chamber Orchestra, the Big Band, the Opera Group, the Symphony Orchestra and the Senior Chapel Choir. These ensembles perform at major concerts including at St Paul’s Cathedral and St John’s Smith’s Square.
Pupils regularly go on to study music at top universities and conservatoires, often winning Scholarships. In each of the past three years we have had pupils winning places at London Conservatoires, including two on full Scholarships to the Royal Academy of Music.
Now in its 7th year, PTC continues to equip pianists & piano teachers with the full range of professional skills for a successful career, plus the opportunity to connect with an inspiring & informative network of pianists.
It provides excellent preparation for all Piano Teaching Diplomas, including those from the ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall and London College, through exposure to the latest in piano teaching pedagogy.
A part-time course, it is designed to suit those with other commitments, lasting one academic year from October through to June. The 2015-16 course consists of two residential weekends, four single Sundays and independent study spread throughout the year.

OCA offers high quality HE open learning music courses in Composition and History/Context. All courses are externally validated and are available nationally and internationally.
The Composing Music courses are at 3 levels and of interest to musicians from all traditions including folk and jazz, as well as ‘classical’.
The music history and context course (From the Present to the Past) enables students to develop a deeper understanding of western classical music, its instruments, key composers and repertoire. It also provides a non-technical (and optional) introduction to music notation and theory.
