The Dark Lady and the Tender Churl

The Dark Lady and the Tender Churl

Saturday, April 23, 2016 - 19:30

The Dark Lady and the Tender Churl is a performance combining new choral music with dramatic readings of Shakespeare’s sonnets, focusing on the tortured love triangle portrayed in the sonnets between Shakespeare, the Dark Lady and the handsome younger man referred to in the first Sonnet as the Tender Churl. Choral settings sung by London’s semi-professional chamber choir The Fourth Choir will be intermingled with performances by Golden Globe nominee Tobias Menzies (Outlander, The Night Manager) of some of the most beautiful and moving of the Sonnets.

In addition to music from Shakespeare's time and celebrated modern settings of his works, the programme features premieres of four new choral pieces by composers Ian Lawson, Benjamin Cramer, Stuart Beatch and Justin Henry Rubin.

The event takes place in the prestigious Middle Temple Hall: the only surviving venue where it is recorded that Shakespeare’s company performed.
