Handel 1707 Carmelite Vespers - Scottish Chamber Choir

Handel 1707 Carmelite Vespers - Scottish Chamber Choir

Saturday, June 9, 2012 - 20:00

One of the best-loved choral compositions of all time, Handel's Dixit Dominus was written for a lavish Vespers service given in Rome's Sancta Maria di Monte Santo in July 1707. The Scottish Chamber Choir with Sospiro Baroque ensemble present the robust Dixit alongside the young composer’s other extant Latin psalm settings: the gracious Nisi Dominus, with its arppeggiated opening giving a foretaste of his future Zadok the Priest; and the dazzling Laudate Pueri for solo soprano and chorus.

At the age of only 22 and on his first Italian sojourn, Handel shows himself a master not only of choral writing but of instrumentation and melodic invention. The 1707 Vespers exude charm and energy.

Sospiro is Edinburgh's freshest group of young musicians dedicated to exploring the vast repertoire of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, performing baroque vocal and instrumental repertoire to the highest standard.
