Musical Banquet - Mince Pies!

Musical Banquet - Mince Pies!

Monday, December 10, 2012 - 13:00

Step into the historic church of St Michael at The North Gate, in the heart of Oxford City, and back in time 400 years to enjoy a free lunchtime recital of Early Music with a Christmas flavour. The critically acclaimed Oxfordshire trio Musical Banquet are making a welcome return to St Michael's and will once again be serving up their delectable seasonal 'Mince Pies' menu of musical treats, aided and abetted by special guests Monday's Madrigals.

With a rich and fruity flling of Orlando Gibbons' setting of the Advent text This is the record of John, for solo voice alternating with chorus, enrobed in the finest patisserie created William Byrd, Michael Praetorius and others this is a tempting lunchtime indulgence for all musical gastronomes!

Interspersed with colourful period anecdotes the concert is an unusual and highly entertaining opportunity to experience works performed using period instruments combined with Countertenor voice in beautiful historic surroundings, much as the 17th and 18th century audience would have heard them. Today's performance will also include the traditional 17th century Neapolotan shepherd's carol Quando nascette Ninno accompanied by the Northumbrian Smallpipes - similar to the Zampogna which would have originally been played. A sight and sound not to be missed!

This is an informal event so why not bring your lunch and escape the hustle and bustle for an hour? No charge is being made for admission but charity donations would be gratefully received.

Musical Banquet's vibrant and energetic performances have delighted critics and audiences alike:

"The effect of such entrancing music was quite magical' "Beautifully presented with wit, polish and panache" "The audience were spellbound"
