Oxford Chamber Music Society - The Brodsky String Quartet

Oxford Chamber Music Society - The Brodsky String Quartet

Sunday, April 21, 2013 - 15:00

A ‘Wheel of Fortune’ programme drawn from 40 of their favourite quartets and short pieces at the spin of a wheel by a member of the quartet or of the audience, producing a full programme in an informal and fun way. The quartet will discuss the music and invite questions etc. from the audience. Rest assured the 40 works are of guaranteed quality!

The Brodsky Quartetis enjoying its 40th birthday this year, having its origins in the players’ schooldays in Middlesbrough. It was the first quartet to arrive ready-formed at music college (RNCM). Receiving the Menuhin Prize as the most promising young group at the first London Quartet Competition (then in Portsmouth), the quartet adopted the name of Brodsky in honour of the great Russian violinist who had been Principal of the Royal Manchester College. Awards followed at Evian (Janácek Medal and Audience Prize) and Tokyo, and in due course for several distinguished recordings. A Royal Philharmonic Society Award in 1998 recognised the quartet’s innovative programming. After holding numerous residencies, including the first ever at Cambridge University, the quartet has embarked on an exclusive concert residency at London’s Cadogan Hall, also at the Royal Scottish Academy for Music and Drama in Glasgow where it holds the International Chair of Chamber Music.
