Tring Chamber Music 2017- A French Impression

Saturday, September 16, 2017 - 19:30

Although neither composer was comfortable with the term ‘impressionist’, Debussy and Ravel are considered musical counterparts to the great French impressionist painters of the early 20th century. In this concert we have every opportunity to enter the sensual sound world which these great masters evoke so vividly. Debussy’s Violin Sonata is the last work he completed before his death whereas Ravel’s Quartet was written when he was just 28. It is the creation of an already mature artist more concerned with craftsmanship than innovation and significantly it is probably the the most often played string quartet of the twentieth century. Chausson was no impressionist but a French romantic to the core. One of this composer’s greatest achievements, ('Never have I had such a success! I can't get over it. Everyone seems to love the Concerto’) it is a highly unusual piece with leanings towards the future with rich César Franck-like harmonies and with one foot firmly set in the romantic past.
