Tring Chamber Music 2019 - Last of the Summer

Saturday, September 21, 2019 - 19:30

Purcell has often been described as the finest English composer before Edward Elgar. To open this late summer concert we play his famous Chaconne. Traditionally a dance of Spanish origin, these variations on a ground bass are remarkable for their invention and emotional power. Time was, England gained a reputation as ’The Land without Music’ referring to the 200 years between Purcell and Elgar. However, Arthur Sullivan, who won huge fame through his Victorian light operas also wrote beautifully crafted, serious music. To question that doubtful perspective on our musical history we have unearthed his charming Romance for string quartet. Howard Shelley has long been a champion of Hummel’s piano music and it is exciting to bring this fine classical composer to the fore. Elgar’s huge Piano Quintet is not only one of his greatest works, but a masterpiece of the genre which displays an astonishingly rich and adventurous musical language. Well done England!
