 Prom 74
Thursday 9 September, 7.30pm

 Katie Derham presents a Prom inspired by the quintessential Romantic, Robert Schumann. Irish pianist Finghis Collins performs the Introduction and Allegro appassionato – the closest Schumann came to writing a second full-blown piano concerto. Meanwhile British composer Robin Holloway takes the song-cycle 'Gedichte der Königin Maria Stuart' as inspiration for his new orchestral work. Gianandrea Noseda conducts the BBC Philharmonic.

 

Hidden Composers
Saturday 11 September, 12.15pm

Lowri Blake takes a look at the lives of two female French composers, Louise Heritte-Viardot and Mel Bonis, both of whom fought against the prejudices of their time to write music. French music specialist Richard Langham-Smith joins to discuss his role in bringing the music back into the public arena. 

 

Soul Music: Send in the Clowns
Saturday 11 September, 3.30pm

An instant hit, Sondheim's song 'Send in the Clown's came from his musical A Little Night Music. Written for actress Glynnis Johns, Judi Dench also played the part of Desiree, who sings it. In the hands of Judy Collins, Shirley Bassey and Barbara Striesand it became even more popular, as this documentary relates.

Last Night of the Proms 1910 Style
Thursday 9 September, 7.30pm

In a day celebrating Proms founder Sir Henry Wood, Paul Daniel conducts the BBC Concert Orchestra in Wood's own last night programme from 100 years ago. 'Wood championed all kinds of great things, including Schoenberg, which we now look on with caution,' Daniel told BBC Music Magazine. 'His boldness is a real lesson.'

 

Monteverdi's Vespers
Friday 10 September, 7.30pm

Back in 1968 conductor John Eliot Gardiner and his Monteverdi Choir made their Royal Albert Hall debut performing Monteverdi's Vespers. And this season they'll be returning to this masterpiece in the same venue to celebrate the work's 400th anniversary. Charles Hazlewood presents.

 

Last Night of the Proms 2010

Union Jacks, heckling from the audience, the sounds of Jerusalem. Yes, it's time for the Last Night of the Proms. You can watch every note on BBC One and Two, from the world premiere of Jonathan Dove's A Song of Joys to to the last cymbal clash at the end of the National Anthem. You can also hear the Prom on Radio 3.
