BBC Music Magazine Award-winning Mendelssohn from the Elias String Quartet

The Elias String Quartet was named Newcomer of the Year at this year's BBC Music Magazine Awards for its live recording at the Wigmore Hall of Mendelssohn, Mozart and Schubert (Wigmore Hall Live WHLive 0028).

Your free download this week is the slow movement from Mendelssohn's String Quartet in E minor, Op. 44 No. 2, from the Elias Quartet's award-winning CD.

'We spent weeks just thinking in Mendelssohn's language,' recalls Donald Grant, second violinist of the Quartet in the May issue of BBC Music Magazine. 'We believe these are real masterpieces – but they demand so much from you. But when you have something like the E minor slow movement, it's so incredibly beautiful, it's worth all the work.'
