Your free download this week is the first movement of Mozart's Symphony No. 35 in D, K385. Renowned Mozartian Sir Charles Mackerras conducts the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in this symphony, a work Mozart penned in 1782. Writing a year later, after his father had returned the score to him following its premiere, Mozart said: 'My new Haffner Symphony has positively amazed me, for I had forgotten every single note of it. It must surely produce a good effect.'
This latest disc (Linn CKD 350) follows Mackerras's recorded account of Mozart's final four symphonies, which scooped Disc of the Year at the 2009 BBC Music Magazine Awards. 'These are the kinds of performances that make it difficult for the listener to sit still,' writes Michael Tanner in the April issue of BBC Music Magazine. 'One is impelled to pace or even dance around, to gesture and nod.'
You can buy a download of the whole CD from Linn here.
