Your free download this week is Tchaikovsky's 'To Forget so Soon', one of the songs the Russian composer wrote around 1870. Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky first recorded Tchaikovsky nearly two decades ago, shortly after winning the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. He returns to his Russian roots for both this CD, accompanied by Ivari Ilja (Delos DE 3393) and for his next, which will feature songs with texts by Alexander Pushkin.
'All credit to this now truly great baritone for pushing the emotion [of Tchaikosky's darker songs] with apparent sincerity and no self pity,' writes David Nice in BBC Music Magazine. '"To Forget so Soon" reaches remarkable dramatic heights.'
