Who was Edward Elgar? Many of us would recognise the Edwardian English gentleman composer, with his groomed moustache, not least from his image on the now discontinued £20 notes. But behind this noble exterior, suggests film-maker John Bridcut, was someone quite different. In his new documentary, Bridcut searches for the hidden Elgar by piecing together letters, musical cues, and by talking to today’s top Elgar interpreters, including Sir Colin Davis, Sir Mark Elder, and Vladimir Ashkenazy. BBC Four, Friday 12 November, 7.30pm

On this day...

… in 1902, Enrico Caruso recorded 'Vesti la giubba' from Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci. As one of the first artists to embrace recording, it's often said that 'Caruso made the gramophone, and the gramophone made Caruso'. Five years later the Italian tenor recorded the aria again, and his Leoncavallo performance became the first record to sell a million copies.
