It's birthdays galore today: Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz was born in 1869, 37 years before child prodigy composer Erich Korngold. 1922 saw the birth of composer Iannis Xenakis in Romania, while in London 16 years later composer Michael Berkeley was born.


On air and screen:
The Birth of British Music continues this Saturday on BBC Two at 7.30pm with a look at Mendelssohn. Catch up on the series on BBC iPlayer here. Meanwhile Radio 3 is turning Sunday over to Haydn with 12 hours of broadcasts from around Europe, starting at the Esterhaza Palace in Hungary.
