What Bruno Walter really thought of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony…

On this day
The English music scholar, composer and pianist Donald Tovey, famous for his illuminating writings on music, was born on 17 July, 1875. His Essays in Musical Analysis and Companion to the Beethoven Sonatas are admired to this day and the pianist Murray Perahia reccomends him as an indispensable guide to Beethoven.

'By taking a hint from Tovey, I've found that the Appassionata works very well if you think of [Shakespeare's] Hamlet,' said Perahia to BBC Music Magazine in July 2009, 'you begin to feel that the ghost is hovering, deciding the dramatic action for the whole.'

On air
The 115th season of the BBC Proms gets underway this evening. Pianist Stephen Hough, who'll be performing all the Tchaikovsky concertos at the Proms, begins his journey with the rarely heard Third Concerto in E flat.

'I’ve never actually attended the First Night of the Proms before so this’ll be my first time doing that,' says Hough to, 'and I’m very excited about it.'  And pianist sisters Katia and Marielle Labèque turn the spotlight on the theme of ‘multiple pianos’ when they perform Poulenc’s Concerto for two pianos…
