Last year no American orchestras made it across the pond to the Proms, so make sure to tune in for the Minnesota's two Proms this weekend. Shostakovich's Cello Concerto and Bruckner's Fourth Symphony are on the programme tonight (Radio 3, 7.30pm); followed by Berg's Violin Concerto 'dedicated to a memory of an angel' and Beethoven's iconic Symphony No. 9 tomorrow (Radio 3, 7.30pm).


On this day...

 …in 1611, the Spanish organist and composer Tomas Luis de Victoria was born. One of the great Renaissance composers, he's sometimes described as the 'Spanish Palestrina'. It's thought he studied with the Italian master in Rome, after being sent there by King Philip II of Spain.
