Autumn from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons
Autumn is officially here and what better way to celebrate than with a movement of ‘Autumn’ from Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons?
Vivaldi based his programmatic violin concertos on sonnets that he himself wrote and ‘Autumn’ begins: ‘The peasant celebrates with dance and song the sweet pleasures of the rich harvest.’ Kati Debretzeni and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment give the movement great energy and poise to evoke the celebration of harvest.
‘Debretzeni directs 14 strings, harpsichord and theorbo of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and creates a sense of intimate chamber playing which we’re priviledged to share,’ writes George Pratt in his review of this recording in our August issue. ‘The imagery of the poems is precisely detailed,’ he adds.
