The opening chords of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony are some of the most recognised in the history of classical music.

But in this recording with the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner, the symphony sounds as explosive and invigorating as it surely must have done at the premiere.

The recording is on the Soli Deo Gloria label and is a live recording made in Carnegie Hall in November 2011.

Writing in BBC Music Magazine, Erik Levi said: ‘John Eliot Gardiner brings tremendous rhythmic drive and irresistible forward momentum to both Symphonies and revels in the sheer audacity of Beethoven’s orchestration, enhanced by the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique’s expert use of period instruments.’
