Johannes Brahms completed his First Violin Sonata in G major in 1879. It wasn’t until seven years later that he returned to the form, drafting his Second and Third sonatas during the summer of 1886 at the lakeside resort of Thun.

Brahms was known for being a perfectionist and, although just these three sonatas are known today, there is evidence that he wrote three or four more, prior to the published First, but destroyed the scores because he was not satisfied with them.

The Violin Sonata No. 3 in D minor – the first movement of which you can download here – took two years to complete and is a passionate and much darker work than the first two sonatas. It has four movements, the first of which opens with a melancholy theme that has become very well known.

‘Dumay and Lortie bring fresh insights to such well-loved music,’ writes Erik Levi in his review of this recording in the January issue of BBC Music Magazine. ‘This beautifully engineered disc abounds in outstanding and musically perceptive playing, a superbly judged mixture of warmth and purity in the A major Sonata, and high octane urgency, particularly in the Finale of the D minor Sonata.’
