The 16th-century Eton Choirbook is treasure trove of early choral music by composers including John Browne, William Cornysh and Walter Lambe.

For this week’s free download, we’re offering you William Cornysh’s Ave maria, mater Dei a 4 – the shortest work in the choirbook – performed by the Choir of Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford and director Stephen Darlington.

The track is from a recording of a selection of works from the Choirbook: Choirs of Angels, on the Avie label (AV 2184).

Below you can listen to another track from the recording – Robert Wylkynson’s Salve regina.

Our critic, Anthony Pryer, gave the disc four stars in the August issue of BBC Music Magazine and said: ‘There are other recordings of this repertory, but the performances here are undoubtedly among the best. Partly this is because the pace is well-judged and spacious, and the voices are exceptionally nimble and focused.’
