Violinist Christina Åstrand and pianist Per Salo have recorded what our critic has called a ‘fascinating programme’ of violin sonatas by Ravel, Bloch and Janáček on the Orchid Classics label. And this week’s free download is the second movement from Ravel’s Sonata for Violin and Piano – Blues (moderato).
The piece was composed between 1923 and 1927 and the influence that jazz had on Ravel is hinted at in the ‘Blues’ label for the second movement. Åstrand and Salo write in the booklet notes that the ‘Ravel was our big inspiration to start with. It is a sonata we love to play and the three movements perfectly describe air, earth and fire for us.’
Writing in the current issue of BBC Music Magazine, our critic Erik Levi said: ‘The virtues of a long-established chamber music partnership are immediately evident in the Ravel, where there is a wonderfully subtle interplay between both instruments in the long sustained melodic lines of the first movement.’
