Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Sonata was written in 1913 but the composer was never happy with it – he thought that at around 25 minutes it was too long. He said of Chopin’s Second Piano Sonata ‘it lasts 19 minutes, and all has been said.’
So, in 1931 he created a shorter version, and it is the third and final movement from this revised version of Rachmaninov's Piano Sonata No. 2 that we’re offering as today’s free download.
Pianist Grace Francis performs on the Quartz label.
In a recent issue of BBC Music Magazine, our critic Michael Church gave the recording four stars and said:
‘Grace Francis studied at the Royal College of Music with the Ukrainian pianist Irina Zaritskaya, who trained in Moscow when Soviet pianism was at its zenith, and who has clearly passed on to her young British pupil the Moscow school’s insistence on a big and expressive sound… the Allegro molto from the Piano Sonata No. 2 is powered along by sumptuous virtuosity.’
