The Spanish composer Tomás Luis de Victoria wrote his Tenebrae Responsores in 1585. They are designed to be performed after scripture readers as part of the services marking the days between Christ’s death and resurrection.
This month’s free download comes from the Responsories for Maundy Thursday and it’s a setting of the text ‘Unus ex discipulis meis tradet me hodie’, ‘One of my disciples will this day betray me.’
Nigel Short conducts choral ensemble Tenebrae on this five-star recording on the Signum label.
The disc was the BBC Music Magazine Choral & Song choice for December. Our critic Anthony Pryer said: ‘Victoria’s settings have already attracted some good performances – from Westminster Cathedral Choir, The Tallis Scholars, The Sixteen, etc – but this recording is the most nuanced and telling available.’
