The French pianist François-Frédéric Guy has now recorded Beethoven’s monumental Piano Sonata No. 29, Op. 106, the Hammerklavier, three times. He has called the work ‘the guiding thread of my artistic endeavours and the centre of gravity around which my repertoire is structured.’

For this week’s free download we’re offering the opening movement of the sonata. The track comes from a recording on the Zig Zag Territoires label.

The recording was given five stars in an issue of BBC Music Magazine, and our critic wrote: ‘This new “live” version [of the Hammerklavier] is an altogether enthralling experience… The great slow movement is slightly more flowing than it was in Guy’s previous recording, but it captures the music’s profound melancholy; while the concluding fugue is an appropriately hair-raising tour de force.’
