ETA Hoffman once said 'where language ends, music begins'. And Mendelssohn's Lieder ohne Worte (Songs Without Words) seem to be arguing this very point.

For this week's free download we're offering the opening A flat major movement of his Songs Without Words, Op. 53 in a recording of Books 1-4 of the Songs by the pianist Ronald Brautigam on the BIS record label.

Writing about the disc in a recent issue of BBC Music Magazine, our critic Roger Nichols said: 'I relished the clarity and sheer beauty of the sound and of Ronald Brautigam's playing… He is without doubt, one of the finest pianists around, and his despatch of Mendelssohn's fastest pieces is thrilling.'
