Nielsen’s Second Symphony has the title ‘The Four Temperaments’ and each of the movements describes one of the medieval ‘humours’: choleric, phlegmatic, melancholic and sanguine.

For this week’s free download we’re offering the final movement – Allegro sanguineo – performed by the New York Philharmonic and conductor Alan Gilbert.

The recording, on the Dacapo label, was given four stars in the January issue of BBC Music Magazine.

Our critic, Anthony Burton, wrote: ‘The New York Philharmonic has historic form in the Nielsen Symphonies, having collaborated with Leonard Bernstein on an outstanding Fifth in 1962. Half a century on, at the start of a new cycle under its conductor Alan Gilbert, it plunges us thrillingly into the composer’s soundworld… this is an immensely promising start to what could well prove a landmark cycle.’
