Mozart’s Mass in C major, K317 acquired its nickname from being used at various coronations more than a decade after it was written. Salieri conducted the piece at the coronation of Leopold II as King of Bohemia in 1791.
For this week’s free download, we’re offering the Gloria from the Mass in a recording by Harry Christophers and the Handel and Haydn Society. The soloists are soprano Teresa Wakim, mezzo-soprano Paula Murrihy, tenor Thomas Cooley and baritone Sumner Thompson.
The recording, on the CORO label, was given four stars in a recent issue of BBC Music Magazine. Our critic, George Hall, wrote: ‘The singing of the Boston Handel and Haydn Society Chorus is spirited throughout, with Harry Christophers highlighting some of the work’s most expressive moments with acute perception… Throughout the disc the sound picture is finely balanced and well put together’
