Rossini’s William Tell overture is probably one of the best-loved and most familiar pieces of classical music ever written. So when a new recording of Rossini’s Overtures was given fours stars in the current issue of BBC Music Magazine, we thought this would be a great piece to offer as a free download.
The opera itself tells the story of a folk hero of Switzerland who fights against Austrian rule, and the overture gives a taste of the drama to come.
This recording of the overture, on the Naxos label, is performed by the Prague Sinfonia Orchestra and conducted by Christian Benda.
Our critic gave the disc four stars and said: ‘This second volume of the Prague Sinfonia’s collected edition of Rossini’s operatic overtures (plus the odd related work) continues the good work of the first… The playing is clean and efficient, well balanced and nicely paced. The collection begins with the most famous (and arguably the best) of the entire series, William Tell, skillfully delivered from the opening quintet of solo cellos to the thrilling martial finale.’
