The opera Orlando furioso from 1714 has only recently been recognised as a work by the great composer Vivaldi.

For many years the opera was thought to be by his contemporary Giovanni Alberto Ristori and only two of the work’s three Acts survive.

This recording on the Naïve label is performed by the ensemble Modo Antiquo and conducted by Federico Maria Sardelli. The track we’re offering is the Act II aria ‘Ah fuggi rapido’, the text of which translates as ‘Ah, swiftly flee/ This evil realm!/ Let noble anger/ Kindle your heart!/ The impure flame/ That burns inside you/ Is the torch of Avernus,/ But not of love’.

Soprano Roberta Mameli performs the aria. The recording was given five stars in the March issue of BBC Music Magazine. Our critic, Nicholas Anderson wrote: ‘The high water-mark for me is Astolfo’s ‘Ah, fuggi rapido’, a scintillating B flat aria sung with brilliant athleticism and engaging warmth… this is one of the most rewarding performances in the Naïve Vivaldi opera survey.’
