This week's free download comes from the fourth volume of 'The Songs of Brahms' from pianist Graham Johnson. For this recording, on the Hyperion label, he's joined by bass-baritone Robert Holl and the song we're offering as the free download is An die Nachtigall ('To the Nightingale').

Brahms's song uses a text by Ludwig Hölty edited by Johann Voss; the poem was also set by Schubert. The poem begins 'Do not pour so loudly the full-throated sounds/ Of your love-kindled songs/ Down from the blossoming boughs of the apple-tree,/ O nightingale!'

Reviewing the disc for the BBC Music Magazine November issue, Hilary Finch wrote: 'Holl has the ability to draw the listener in. Through his profound responses to the wordsetting and to the songs' subtle shifts of emotion, he can focus the anguish of the listening lover in An die Nachtigall.'
