This Week's Free Download
Download sparkling Rossini from La Cenerentola
The closing aria of Rossini’s opera La Cenerentola is one of the most challenging works in the bel canto repertoire – and for this week’s free download we’re offering you the chance to hear it as recorded at the 2007 Glyndebourne opera festival.
Rossini's opera tells the familiar Cinderella story, complete with detestable ugly sisters. The Glyndebourne festival is largely responsible for rescuing the glittering work from obscurity when its second music director, Vittorio Gui, decided to conduct the work in 1952.
The most recent production of the opera was recorded in 2007 and has just been released on Glyndebourne’s own label.
Writing in the August issue of BBC Music Magazine, our critic Christopher Cook gave the disc four stars and said: ‘[The opera] fits the house like a well-turned ankle in a glass slipper… Ruxandra Donose is everything that Rossini himself might have hoped for: a mezzo with a top extension for whom that final death-defying aria, littered with coloratura, holds no fears.’
