Reviewing this recording in the May issue of BBC Music Magazine, our critic Terry Blain said ‘It’s hard to imagine Go, song of mine, the opening item, done better.’
So we’re offering the track as this week’s free download. The recording, on Signum records, is a collection of choral works and part-songs by the great British composer Edward Elgar performed by The Rodolfus Choir directed by Ralph Allwood.
Go, song of mine was written in Rome in May 1909 and uses a medieval text translated by the poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti. ‘Dishevell’d and in tears, go, song of mine,/ To break the hardness of the heart of man.’
Our critic gave the disc four stars and said of this track ‘Allwood punctuates the phrasing of the poem with rare intelligence, securing pleasing unanimity of end-consonants without over-drilling the singers… The sound is ideally balanced. A fine introduction to a still under-appreciated area of Elgar's output.’
