Chopin composed his 24 Preludes around 1837 as a commission from the pianist, publisher and piano manufacturer, Camille Pleyel.

The 'Raindrop' Prelude, No. 15 is the longest of the set and it’s this Prelude we’re offering as the Download of the Week this week.

Alexandra Dariescu was featured as a BBC Music Magazine Rising Star in June 2011 and speaking to Rebecca Franks, she said the pianists who inspired her were Dinu Lipatti, Radu Lupu and Martha Argerich: ‘I absolutely adore her, she’s a god for me.’

This track comes from Dariescu’s new disc on the Champs Hill label on which she performs Chopin’s 24 Preludes, Dutilleux’s Trois Preludes as well as Chopin’s Preludes in A flat major, Op. posth and in C sharp minor, Op. 45.

Dariescu’s previous disc of Chopin, Liszt and Schumann was given four stars in BBC Music Magazine. Our critic said ‘She is clearly a very musical player, with excellent instincts and a natural way of shaping the music, from her lovely phrasing to her broader articulation of structure.’
