This week's free download comes from the BBC Music Magazine Instrumental choice for July. Paolo Pandolfo plays the Chaconne from De Machy's Suite No. 4 in G major for viola da gamba in a recording on the Glossa label.

De Machy is best known as the composer who wrote a furious polemic against the composer and theorist Jean Rousseau on the subject of whether the viol was a harmonic or merely a melodic one.

This recording, though, is far from being merely of academic interest, as our critic Kate Bolton writes "Paolo Pandolfo's hotshot dexterity clearly conveys Machy’s chameleon-like character and the versatility of his instrument, Pandolfo coaxes an array of shades and effects and lets the viol reverberate with Machy's plush musical textures.
