Our free download this week is the first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony – but with a twist.

Yury Martynov plays Liszt’s transcriptions for piano of Beethoven’s famous orchestral work, on a disc that was our Instrumental Choice in the May 2015 issue. The playing, wrote our critic Misha Donat, ‘is simply stunning: this is music that requires a virtuoso of the highest order and it seems there’s no technical challenge it throws up that can daunt Martynov.’

The Russian pianist is nearing the end of his survey of all the Beethoven-Liszt Symphony transcriptions for the Zig-Zag Territoires label. Liszt said of his transcriptions: ‘I will be satisfied if I have accomplished the task of the intelligent engraver, the conscientious translator, who grasp the spirit of a work along with the letter, and thereby help to propagate knowledge of the masters and the appreciation of the beautiful.'
