This week's download is the Allegretto quasi menuetto movement from Brahms's Cello Sonata in E minor, played by cellist Julius Berger and pianist Oliver Kern. It appears on their new CD for Nimbus Records, 'Inspired by Bach', a two-disc programme exploring the legacy and influence of JS Bach's music. The recording features the original four-movement version of Brahms's Sonata, reinstating the Adagio affettuoso more commonly heard in the Second Cello Sonata, but which many musicologists believe belongs to the First.

'Julius Berger has evidently thought long and hard about the most effective way with which to connect Bach's music to some central works in the cello repertory,' writes Erik Levi in the September issue of BBC Music Magazine. 'The solution he has come up with is both imaginative and thought-provoking.'
