This week's free download is the first movement of Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 1, performed by Corinne Morris with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. The disc it is taken from, 'Chrysalis', was awarded four stars for performance and recording in the February issue of BBC Music Magazine.

Despite being written by Haydn around 1761-1765, the score of his First Cello Concerto was only discovered in 1961 at the Prague National Museum, when it was re-premiered by Mstislav Rostropovich. In recent years it has become a staple of the cello repertoire, being performed and recorded by many of the major virtuouso performers.

'Morris gives sensitive and stylish performances, and she's ably supported by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and its leader, Stephanie Gonley', writes Misha Donat. 'It's a pity though that the recording places the cello just a little too close, so that you can hear every movement of the bow across the strings.'
