This week's free download is the second movement, Scherzo, of Mendelssohn's String Quartet No. 5, performed by the Doric String Quartet and recorded on the Chandos label. The recording was awarded four stars for performance and five for recording in the November issue of BBC Music Magazine.

Mendelssohn wrote six string quartets in his lifetime, the fifth being the longest. He did write another quartet when he was 14, just after he completed his 13 string symphonies, but this was never published in his lifetime. The third, fourth and fifth quartets were written for and dedicated to Crown Prince Oscar of Sweden.

'The naturalness of the playing is matched by the comprehensive Chandos sound: not too distant, and with exactly the right amount of resonance. I look forward to Volume 2.'
