Premiered in London in 1738, Handel’s Faramondo didn’t exactly meet with a glowing reception. The production ran for only eight performances, after which the opera fell into obscurity for over two centuries.

Unfairly so, as there is a lot to enjoy in this complex tale of rivalry and love, set in fifth-century France, not least the aria we are offering as a free download this week: ‘Si tornero a morir’ is sung here by Emily Fons in the title role, as Faramondo pledges to die for his love, Rosimonda.

In BBC Music Magazine’s January 2015 review of this recording, conducted by Laurence Cummings Anna Picard praises the mezzo-soprano’s performance: ‘Pitched against bass-baritone Njål Sparbo’s implacable King Gustavo, Fons delivers a stunning “Si tornero a morir” and leads an almost ideal cast of young singers.’
