Haydn wrote around 40 concertos for instruments including the flute, oboe, piano and bassoon. But writing concertos wasn’t something that was central to his work, partly perhaps because although he played both the violin and piano he admitted to not being ‘a wizard on any instrument.’
Nevertheless, the three Piano Concertos by Haydn, recorded by pianist Marc-André Hamelin with Les Violons du Roy and conductor Bernard Labadie, are delightful.
The track we’re giving away this week is the third movement, Rondo All’Ungarese: Allegro Assai, from the Piano Concerto in D major, Hob XVIII:11.
The disc, on the Hyperion label, was given four stars in the May issue of BBC Music Magazine. Our critic, Misha Donat, wrote: ‘The D major Concerto with its Hungarian-style finale has deservedly become popular. Hamelin and Les Violons du Roy play that gipsy rondo with irresistible verve, adding a local dash of colour by means of some double-bass slapping with the wood of the bow.’
