JS Bach’s Cantata Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme was written for the 27th Sunday after Trinity and tells the story of the five foolish and five wise virgins.
The five foolish virgins burn all the oil in their lamps waiting for the bridegroom to appear, while the wise virgins save their oil until the shout goes up at midnight that ‘Behold, the bridegroom cometh’.
This week’s free download is the opening Chorale from the work, performed here by the Bach Collegium Japan and conducted by Masaaki Suzuki.
The recording of Bach's work, on the BIS label, was given four stars in the May issue of BBC Music Magazine. Our critic, Paul Riley, wrote: ‘To open, Suzuki looks forward with Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 140 whose fourth movement elaboration of the eponymous chorale Bach later reworked into one of his Schübler choral preludes. Hana Blažíková and Peter Kooij’s second duetto is ecstatic and full of life.’
