This week we are offering the third movement, Allegretto un poco, of Nielsen’s Third Symphony, Sinfonia Espansiva, as a free download.

Written between 1910 and 1911, and premiered the following year by the Royal Danish Orchestra, the performance was conducted by Nielsen himself in a concert that also featured the first public performance of his Violin Concerto. Unlike in any of his other six symphonies, Nielsen includes wordless vocal solos, performed by soprano and baritone voices in the second movement.

Featured as the Orchestral Choice in BBC Music Magazine’s March issue, this recording by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sakari Oramo, received high praise from Stephen Johnson: ‘The Sinfonia Espansiva (No. 3) is also finely controlled and full of character… Oramo sees the symphony through: the first movement builds steadily to its intoxicating waltz-climax, and the last two movements continue the story convincingly’
