The fifth movement of Schumann’s Kreisleriana is our free download this week, performed by Nelson Goerner. Featured as March 2015’s Recording of the Month, the Argentinian pianist’s performance was praised by reviewer Jessica Duchen: ‘There is no stinting on expansiveness of heart as this music jumps out of its own shadows into impassioned outbusts; and Goerner’s nimble fingerwork in the flickering, impish writing of the fifth piece…often seems to barely touch the ground.’

Kreisleriana was named after one of ETA Hoffman’s fictional characters: the Kapellmeister Johannes Kreisler, in whose eccentricities, brilliance and mercurial moods Schumann saw something of himself.

Composed in only four days in 1838, the overwhelming inspiration for the piece came from Schumann’s wife, Clara. ‘I’m overflowing with music and beautiful melodies now,’ he wrote to her, ‘You will smile so sweetly when you discover yourself in it [Kreisleriana].’
