The King’s Consort performs Purcell
‘The King’s Consort consolidated its reputation with pioneering recordings of Purcell’s complete sacred music, odes and secular songs’, explains Paul Riley in his review of this disc in the September issue of BBC Music Magazine.
Now they have returned to Purcell with this recording of the four-part sonatas, which the composer’s widow, Frances, published two years after Purcell's death.
The Ten Sonatas in Four Parts are similar in concept and style to the Twelve Sonatas in Three Parts published by Purcell in 1683, which suggests that they were written around the same time. The Sonata in A minor, Z804, has a melancholic opening characterised by beautiful rising and falling chromatic motifs.
