The great soprano Maria Callas, who would have been 90 this month, recorded the title role of Cherubini’s Medea six times, perhaps most famously in Dallas in 1958.

This week we’re offering one of the opera’s show-stopping arias from Callas’s 1959 recording made at the Royal Opera House, London. ‘Dei tuoi figli la madre’ (‘I am the mother of your sons’) is from the opera’s first act when Medea is trying to win her husband, Jason, back.

This recording, which has just been released on ICA Classics, was given four stars in the December issue of BBC Music Magazine. Our critic Michael Tanner wrote:

‘This Italian version of a work originally written to a French libretto and translated into Italian via German would have small claims to be authentic. What is authentic is the passion and intensity that Callas brings to what would become one of her greatest roles.’
