For this week’s download, we’re offering the final movement (Allegro Molto) from Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Sonata, performed by Nikolai Lugansky.

On this recording, on the Naïve record label, Lugansky has created his own version of the sonata, bringing together elements of Rachmaninov’s first and second versions of the piece, written respectively in 1913 and 1931.

Speaking exclusively to BBC Music Magazine, Lugansky said of the piece ‘I’ve played the Sonata No. 2 since I was very young… He created a shorter version – which is fine if you don’t really like Rachmaninov very much. But I’m in love with everything he’s done.’

The disc was given five stars in the January issue of BBC Music Magazine and our critic Calum MacDonald wrote: ‘Even at its most aggressive, Lugansky’s playing has a clarity and an utterly convincing sense of where every passage fits into the grand design. A really impressive disc.’
