Mozart’s Coronation Piano Concerto (No. 26) was once one of his most popular. He wrote it in 1788, composing so quickly he didn’t even bother to notate much of the left-hand accompaniment. It was later played at the Coronation of Leopold II.

This week’s download is the second movement Larghetto from the concerto. The recording, on the BIS label, features pianist Ronald Brautigam with Die Kölner Akademie conducted by Michael Alexander Willens.

The disc, which also includes Piano Concerto No. 17 in G, was given four stars for performance in the January issue of BBC Music Magazine and our critic, Misha Donat wrote: ‘Like most pianists Ronald Brautigam uses the left-hand part that was added when the Concerto was first published, some three years after Mozart’s death. He also supplies some much-needed ornamentation in the slow movement’s middle section… In the great G major Concerto the interplay between piano and winds is perfectly judged, and the wit and drama of the variation finale vividly handled.’
